Quilt Preparation Guide

Tips for preparing your quilt for longarming

A little preparation goes a long way toward achieving the best quilting results. Please review these tips before submitting your quilt top.

Sew a Victory Lap

If you have a quilt that does not include borders, sometimes the seams at the very edge come apart from handling.  This can result in flipped edges during the longarming process.  If this is your case, sew a line around the entire edge of your quilt, 1/8” from the edge.

Give it a Good Press

Get out your iron and give your quilt top a final press, ensuring open seams are open and other seams are pressed in the desired direction.

Clip Threads

Those stray threads on the back of your quilt can show through.  Make sure you have clipped your threads, especially those dark ones!  Additionally, ensure you have clipped any stray threads on the front.

 Which Way is Up?

Use a piece of painter’s tape, or safety-pinned note to mark the center top of your quilt, if the back is also directional, mark it too.  This will ensure your top and backing align the way you want.

Backing

If you have a seam in your backing, use a generous ½” seam allowance, backstitch at both ends to secure it and press the seam open to reduce bulk.

Square it Up!

Make sure your top and back are squared – this will ensure the best possible longarming results

Wavy Borders?

To avoid wavy borders, take three measurements of the quilt (top, center, bottom), average them, and cut border strips to that length, rather than measuring against the quilt top.
